‘White Collar’s Matt Bomer Joins Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Magic Mike’

Matt Bomer, star of the USA series White Collar, has joined the ab-worthy cast of hunks who’ll play male strippers in Magic Mike, Steven Soderbergh’s next film. So far, Soderbergh has cast Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer and Matthew McConaughey. Magic Mike is a Saturday Night Fever-style coming of age story. Tatum plays the title character, who schools a young dancer (Pettyfer) in how to hustle on and off the stage. The inspiration was Channing’s own experiences as a stripper when he was 19. Nick Wechsler is producing with Tatum, Gregory Jacobs and Reid Carolin. Carolin wrote the script. Soderbergh has called the film “sexy, funny and shocking” using Saturday Night Fever as a model. Bomer will next be seen in the Andrew Niccol-directed In Time, playing the pivotal role of a wealthy man who gives the protagonist (Justin Timberlake) a shot at a longer life.

    4. Dev says:

Soderbergh says it will be “sexy, funny and shocking”. One can only hope. Sex, Lies, and Videotape anyone?

Matt would make a perfect Napoleon Solo. Too bad Soderbergh is teaming up with George Clooney who is a tad too old to play the role.

    5. Afsana says:

I will need ice buckets to watch this. I hope his role in this movie is bigger than his role in In Time.

    6. Sab says:

So excited to see another movie role for Matt, and he continues to work with visionary and talented directors. Soderbergh has some hits and misses, but he is very talented, and this will be a high profile project.

    7. Mary says:

This boy cannot sit still for a moment and I cannot wait for this film and the one this fall. A good Matt fix before January!

Another day, another visit to MBF another smile!

    8. Olena says:

Excellent news 😀 And Soderbergh! Yay! I’m so happy for Matt 😀 *does a little happy dance*

    9. Isabelle says:

I am dying to see this movie right now, I mean now! Matt and Alex plus Channing that’s a dream come true.

    10. Kavya says:

A stripper….Hmmm. He’s going to be the hottest guy in the movie! I’m so happy for Matt!!

    11. Suzanne says:

Guess I am the exception; I just would like to see him (the star) as a sensitive guy in a nice romantic comedy.

    12. Kelly says:

I agree with you Suzanne. I’m trying to keep an open mind about it, but would have loved to see him as a lead in a romantic comedy as well. I trust his judgement though and will support whatever career decisions he makes. 🙂

    13. Angela says:

Bomer and any flesh flashing gets my vote. Romantic comedy? Maybe, but perhaps some way down the line. I personally would like to see him in something gritty and Oscar worthy. He deserves it.

    14. Melissa says:

I’m excited about this role for Matt. Working with Steven Soderbergh is a good opportunity for him. Soderbergh is a highly regarded director and producer. He’s one of the few who can navigate between big Hollywood commercial movies and smaller budget, edgier fare. Magic Mike looks like one of the latter. Soderbergh’s description is very intriguing : “‘sexy, funny and shocking’ using Saturday Night Fever as a model”. Saturday Night Fever is a great film and Sex, Lies, and Videotape demonstrated Soderbergh knows how to make a movie that is sexy and intelligent. I am hooked!

    15. lily says:

Initially, I’m a bit surprised by this role for Matt. Had hoped for him to take action-tough-guy or romantic-lead roles, but then again, I do think Matt is a very talented actor and would probably like to stretch his acting muscles, doing something different and not playing it safe.
Now, I’m looking forward to see how Matt will portray this character..

    16. I says:

I agree with you Angela, he spent thousands at one of the best theatre schools in the world, so I think he would like to be challenged rather then play in some predictable rom-com.

I think with being in WC which is not very challenging on a daily basis, he probably wants to stretch his acting muscles and put all that training to use. As a creative person I know how frustrating it can be to not push yourself intellectually.

And yes, I’d love for him to go for Oscar worthy roles. He ain’t just a pretty boy! 🙂

    17. Sab says:

I suspect that Soderbergh’s involvement was key to Matt saying yes to this. He seems to pretty much be able to get whatever actors he wants to work for him. And as Melissa alluded to, it looks like this is going to be an indie film, slanting towards the edgy. I can see why Matt would do it.

Also, I’ve read this films this fall, so – although I don’t want Matt to wear himself out – he’s got time to do another movie in between this and S4 filming for White Collar. Maybe he’ll do something more mainstream then.

    18. TiSa says:

Does he take a lead role in this movie? Well, honestly, I prefer him taking a lead role as the comical superhero or something. I want him make a step into the higher level as an actor. He’s very talented and great actor. Hopefully, this movie won’t be disappointing. I hope the best for Matt Bomer. 🙂

    19. Kelly says:

Been reading some of the articles on “Magic Mike”. In case you don’t already know, filming should start September 14th in Tampa, Florida.

    20. Lynda says:

That’s good. Will give him a little time with his family in between and he shouldn’t have to devote too much time to the role. Sounds like a great choice to me – well known director, high profile project, but not too much time away after the White Collar filming. And like somebody else said, he’ll be able to work in something else before they go back for season 4.

    21. Rowan says:

Kelly they are just filming for a week in Florida and then it’s back to LA. One thing I know is that he wouldn’t want to be that much away from his family.

I agree with the Matt needs an Oscar worthy role. You muc remember his interviews-I do!-he isn’t interested in mainstream fame and says he just wants to “make movies that make you laugh or cry”.

    22. Sab says:

To confirm what Rowan, said, as per Tatum’s website, looks like principle photography will be done in LA, with exteriors being filmed in Florida, so Matt won’t have to spend too much time away from home for this project. 🙂

“Shooting on ‘Magic Mike‘ will start in mid September, and the movie will film in Los Angeles and will shoot exteriors in Tampa during principal production.”
