‘White Collar’ Cast: Matt Bomer’s Always Singing On Set

White Collar’s Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay took the Internet by storm when they sang “Carry On My Wayward Son” during a web chat earlier this year, but as we visited the set of the USA Network show yesterday, Crushable was very pleased to learn that Matt regularly sings between takes.

“Matt loves to sing and just makes up songs about the scene,” revealed Marsha Thomason, whose gay FBI agent character Diana is returning as a series regular in Season 2. She mimicked Matt putting his hand to ear and hitting a high note ala Whitney Houston, admitting that it’s “really difficult,” not to crack up when Matt sings.

“At the end of the day you’ll go home with these stupid songs in your head,” she said. “It’s pretty funny.”

Another co-star, Sharif Atkins, was quick to admit that Matt has an great voice. “That kid’s got a voice on him,” he said.

Tim DeKay, who has been known to duet with Matt Bomer, demurred, “He can sing. I do the melody, he does all the harmony.” So will we get to see any singing on White Collar during Season 2? “Peter and Neal are going to break a huge international karaoke ring,” Tim joked. “No. It would be fun, though. Neal says, ‘We’ve got to go up, we’ve got to sing now or else…’”

Tim also revealed that Matt “knows his coffee” and frequently orders elaborate and delicious drinks from Starbucks. (In fact, he was snapped enjoying some coffee on set a few weeks ago) “Sometimes Matt will order something from Starbucks if we’re on location or something like that. And a lot of times he’ll say, ‘What do you want? I’ll get you something,’” Tim revealed. “And every time it’s like, ‘Whatever you’re having.’”

More Matt in PAPERMAG’s Beautiful People Issue

Though Matt Bomer shines in front of cameras on USA’s White Collar, in which he plays an ex-con recruited by the FBI to solve crimes, he’s got a likely future on the stage. Here’s an extra photo of Bomer from our 2010 Beautiful People issue and some additional quotes from his interview with Matthew Schneier. Read on to find out what Bomer thinks of surly New Yorkers, his hopes to do more theater and the possible new CW series he might have in the works.

On Manhattan being all a bit much: “I lived in Midtown back [in the early aughts], and I’d never do that again. It’s byzantine… you walk outside, and I hear the Rolling Stones song, ‘Here Comes Your 19th Nervous Breakdown.’ It’s hard to be Zen there. [On the other hand,] it’s too Zen in L.A. I feel completely blessed to have the best of both worlds. There are things I love and appreciate in New York — the culture, the metropolitan aspect, taking public transportation. The museums, the theater. And New Yorkers. There’s nothing I love more than a really indignant New Yorker walking through our shot who says ‘I don’t care what you f***ers are doing, I’m going to my building!’ They’re so righteous about it.”

Chekhov please: “I would really love to do Orpheus Descending, the [Tennessee] Williams play. I’d love to do some Chekhov. And depending on the project, I wouldn’t mind singing either. The first job I got out of school was — before I graduated, actually — was the first workshop of Spring Awakening.”

On creating a new CW series?: “I’ve sold this pilot I’ve been working on to the CW. I just turned in the final draft and they’re deciding if they’re going to shoot it or not in the next few weeks. It’s the first thing that I’ve sold. I won’t act in it. It’s not a vanity piece, it’s never something where I thought let me write something for me.”

    Beautiful People 2010: Matt Bomer

Cable procedurals are famous for their ripped-from-the-headlines plots, but when USA debuted White Collar, starring Matt Bomer as a white-collar criminal-turned-sleuth, in the wake of Madoff, well…. “That was completely fortuitous!” Bomer laughs. “We did the pilot, and shortly thereafter the Madoff thing went down. I just thought to myself, ‘Wow, this is really out there in the zeitgeist right now.’”

As Neal Caffrey, an ex-con whose sentence is commuted in exchange for helping the FBI put away other criminals, Bomer has the sort of reckless charm not often associated with the stern, sad-eyed federal agent. “I watched The Hustler, The Sting, and To Catch a Thief,” he says of his research into the role. “But I also tried to throw in a little bit of Ferris Bueller and Eddie Murphy in 48 Hours.” Bueller with a badge? “I like characters with flaws, who have shadow,” Bomer explains.

He was a high-school football player in small-town Spring, Texas — Friday Night Lights country — an hour outside of Houston, when the acting bug first bit. “I started acting professionally when I was 17. I quit the team and did a production of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Alley Theatre in Houston. I used to drive down at the end of the school day, do the show, do my homework during intermission and drive an hour back to Spring to go to school the next day.” The footballers didn’t object. “I think they understood that this was what I wanted to do with my life,” he says. Of course, he goes on with a smile, “If I had been the All-State quarterback, they would have had some objections to my playing the young collector in Streetcar.”

Matthew wears a blazer and pants by Calvin Klein Collection and shirt by Converse by John Varvatos.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Matt Bomer (Neal Caffrey)

Do you think Neal is going to trust Peter more in the upcoming season?
I think Neal never really trusted anybody 100 percent, but I think Peter’s probably the person he trusted the most so you know, I don’t think he’ll ever be really, completely given over to him in terms of trust but he definitely has a lot of trust in him.

Did you know the show was going to be such a huge success when you started?
No! We had no idea. To me, I just loved the script, I loved the character, it was so much fun to do that whatever came about was great. I think I’ve been in this business long enough to not really have any expectations, just show up, do the work, and do the best I could. And I knew I was on a network that really gave shows a shot, and really got behind their shows and so I’m really grateful to be working for them and I was pleasantly surprised.

Do you have anything else you are working on?
Right now, it was tough because this hiatus was so short. I did have movie offers, but I couldn’t shoot them in such a brief period of time so that was tricky. But right now, I’m doing a workshop of a new Broadway musical. They’re re-making the last Rat Pack movie actually, Robin and The Seven Hoods, and I’m playing the Sinatra role in that, so that was sort of a fun way for me to get to flex my creative muscles with a much smaller time constraint.

The con is on for CMU grad

His blue eyes draw your attention.

His thick brown hair makes you want to run your hands through it.

His trim body looks even more polished in a vintage Dior suit topped off with a black fedora.

That’s the outfit you’ll often see on Matt Bomer, a 2000 Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama graduate, in his role as con man Neal Caffrey on USA Network’s “White Collar,” which airs at 10 p.m. Tuesdays.

Bomer’s character is charming, sexy and sophisticated. After escaping from prison and getting caught by the man who put him there, Agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay ), Caffrey strikes a bargain. In exchange for his freedom, he will help the FBI catch the most elusive white collar criminals in the country.

Bomer, 32, grew up in Texas.

Acting has been his passion since he was a child.

“I’ve always had an active imagination,” Bomer says. “And I have always loved being on stage. It was a way of self expression. I believe the stage will always be my home. It is a great outlet for me.”

He chose to study at Carnegie Mellon because of its impressive reputation. He lauds the teaching staff and says the curriculum is so broad, you get exposed to all facets of the profession.

“At Carnegie Mellon, you get the training you need,” says Bomer, who now splits his time between California and New York, where “White Collar” is shot. “It is so comprehensive. It was a great place to learn and take risks and to hone your craft.”

    Added Men’s Health Magazine interview

A self-described T-shirt and jeans kind of guy, Bomer says he also appreciates his character’s impeccably tailored suits. “I’ve taken a lot of notes from him,” he says of Caffrey’s Rat Pack-inspired mix of vintage pieces and modern brand, like Paul Smith and Calvin Klein. “Throw on a tie bar, cuff links, and a fedora, and I feel like a different guy.”

Bomer, and admirer of Paul Newman says, “I like to look stylish, but never trendy. I don’t want to look at pictures of me 10 years from now and say, ‘What was I thinking?’” Here’s his take on balancing the modern and the timeless.

    Choose Simple Accessories

A simple color palette can be undone by flashy accessories. Bomer chooses his carefully. “A man’s uniform is pretty standard,” he says, “so I like adding a cool tie or tie bar to let my personal style shine through a little.”

CMU grad enjoys twists and turns in White collar role

When he was in Pittsburgh at CMU, Bomer lived at different times in Shadyside, Squirrel Hill and Oakland, and he played a bag boy in a Giant Eagle TV commercial. He maintains contact with CMU professor of voice/speech Don Wadsworth, who served as his dialect coach when Bomer had to speak Italian and French in an early “White Collar” episode.

Although Bomer previously had a recurring role on NBC’s “Chuck” (as the spy Bryce Larkin) and starred in ABC’s 2007 series “Traveler,” “White Collar” represents a break-out role for the actor. USA put a lot of marketing money behind the show’s premiere, including huge billboard photos of Bomer that went up in the country’s largest TV markets.

“It’s obviously completely surreal,” he said of seeing himself two stories high. “But the great thing about it is it feels so good to have a network so strongly behind us. Whatever it takes, I’m happy with. I would much rather that than, ‘Oh, yeah, another one of our shows.’ There was a certain point where I wanted to lock myself in my studio apartment for a week or two, but I’m just thankful they’re behind us.”

The support has now extended the show to a second season. Production resumes in March or April in New York.
