Matt Bomer collars big audience on cable

Matt Bomer is so handsome you wonder if he was engineered, not born.

Dig beneath the model looks and you realize he’s not just a good-looking guy, he’s a really good actor.

The tailored look he sports in public? It’s just a matter of respect, he says. “I think you need to dress nice when you go to talk to people about your show.”

The show — “White Collar” — has generated a lot of buzz, largely because Bomer is such a charismatic leading man. He plays a con artist who partners with an FBI agent to solve crimes.

Like “Remington Steele,” the USA series gives its star a great launching pad — one that has translated into film work and occasional hosting gigs.

While filling in for Kathie Lee Gifford on the “Today” show, Bomer even sang, revealing yet another color in his box. Performing on the Kennedy Center Honors, he wowed audiences with a tribute to Jerry Herman.

“It was an amazing experience,” Bomer says. “I think the last time I sang on stage was 10 years ago.”

More layers to reveal? “I just do my work and live my life. There’s always that volume knob of people’s voices and speculation. But I found you can turn it as low as you want. I have a great family and people in my life. I don’t focus on other parts of the business.”

Nice article. I loved getting a glimpse into his childhood. Sounds like he was a bit of a handful.

    2. Melissa says:

It’s always nice to get a reminder that there are actors who are grounded and have their priorities straight. Do your job and live your life with your family and friends. The rest of it is noise.

    3. Melissa says:

Oh, and it was interesting to read that Matt considered being a serious journalist at one point. He would have been good at it.

    4. Helen says:

Good for Matt! His private life and family are his own business. He should be judged by the job he does, which is great.

    5. Suzanne says:

Nice article. I’m sure he could do anything well that he attempted. He is just the sort of guy you want only good things to happen to. I have been impressed from the beginning of White Collar (which is my first glimpse of him) and I hope there is an emmy in his future.

    6. R says:

    7. Kavya says:

I love that Matt has everything he could ever ask for and still is down to earth. I really wish Matt the best of luck even though he doesn’t need it!

    8. Rowan says:

Urgh, Matt is losing to Joe! No way! But then the first comment was about voting for Joe cause he’s straight!?

    9. rks says:

      @Rowan – yes,sad people are so ignorant.

    10. Trish says:

If the old Western movie, Red River, is ever re-made…suggested casting: Matt for the Montgomery Clift role-Matthew Garth(looks, build, voice, eyes….uncanny!!!), Tim for the John Wayne role-Dunston(so Peter, and JW was only 39 but looked a “little” older,) Willie for the Walter Brennan role-Grutt..perfect!!! Sharif…many good, choice roles for the cowboys siding with “Matt’s” character, “Hughes” as the man buying the cattle and either Tiff or Hillarie(my choice) as the female lead and love interest for Matt. The character relationships and mannerisms are so close to those on WC that it is almost uncanny….IF YOU EVER GET TO SEE IT just keep in mind it is an OLD, black & white movie

    11. Dev says:

Montgomery Clift was a beautiful and talented actor. Alas I think the traditional western is dead but I could see Matt playing Matthew Garth. However, for Tess Millay I’d go with Emily Blunt or Rachel McAdams. And for Dunson I’d go with someone more like Daniel Craig.

    12. Trish says:

I agree with all your non-WC casting choices. The heart of that 1948 movie is a bromance and although it’s well before my time its always been a favorite. I happened to catch the last half of it on TCM recently (the first time since WC premiered) and as I was watching it, I could just imagine the WC actors in those roles. Matt had just used his Texas accent in WC which may have helped to spark it.

    13. Rowan says:

Matt Bomer is refreshingly down to earth and I think that comes from having a stable background with solid education.

I’ve also noticed that he’s a lot less naive in his interviews and more clued up but honest. Love it and so rare for a Hollywood star who are constantly feeding us with lies.

I love that he mentions you can control how much of your personal life you want to put out there, basically saying what we all know that many stars call the Paps themselves to take ‘accidental’ pictures of them.

I also loved how in wisely mentioned that success of a show has little to do with how good it is BUT the people working behind who market it or want it to work. Sooo true. There are so many shows out there that are like gone after a season simply because they dipped and you get shows that are still going strong with smaller viewers.

Like Mr Bomer more and more!

    14. teri says:

Yes, to me, Matt Bomer has super good looks but it’s his acting talent and what I see him do and say when he’s not acting that makes me even more interested and stick around for more.

      Can’t get enough!
