Matt Bomer: ‘It Was Great to Share’ Emmy Nomination News With Husband Simon

After dropping upwards of 40 pounds for his role in “The Normal Heart,” it’s all about love and family right now for Matt Bomer.

Bomer, 36, was “blown away and just so grateful” when his name was announced today as an Emmy Award nominee for best supporting actor for his portrayal of Felix in the HBO adaptation of Larry Kramer’s 1985 play about the onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis among the gay population in New York City.

After the “White Collar” star dropped to an astonishing 130 pounds for the role to show how the disease can ravage the human body — which meant shedding the chiseled features he usually shows off in his hit TV show or movies like “Magic Mike.”

Even though it was a long, difficult road to this apex point — Bomer said all the hard work culminated in one call this morning from his husband Simon Halls.

“I’m in New York and was getting ready to go to work on ‘White Collar.’ I got a phone call from my husband and he shared the news with me,” Bomer said. “It was so great to get to share that moment with him, because I had to separate myself from my family for a while to play this role. I’m sure when I was 130 pounds, I wasn’t always in the best mood, so it was nice to get to share a happy moment with him.”

At first, Bomer admitted he couldn’t even grasp the gravity of an Emmy nomination.

“I couldn’t even speak for the first minute,” he said. “I was overcome with gratitude, just the moment was so profound for me. I’ve been working in TV for 13 years and to have this moment, I was completely overwhelmed and had to collect myself for a bit. Simon knew firsthand how hard I worked on this role, how much we put into it, myself as an actor, and us collectively as a family. it was just really great to get to share that moment with him.”

USA’s ‘White Collar’ To Get Six-Episode Final Season

One of USA Network‘s signature series, drama White Collar, is poised to wrap its run with a six-episode sixth and final season. There is no official word yet, but I hear the network and series producer Fox TV Studios are finalizing the deal. The size of the order looks like a compromise between a movie/mini-series conclusion USA had been considering and a full-length season, sought by producer FfvS. Season 5 ended with a cliffhanger involving the abduction of Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer). All of USA’s other established series — Monk, Burn Notice (also produced by FtvS), Psych and In Plain Sight — also had received a proper send-off. Moved to fall for the first time since its first season, White Collar got dinged up against in-season competition but rebounded in January when the conclusion of Season 5 averaged 2.8 million viewers in Live+Same Day, up 22% from fall, and 955,000 adults 18-49, up 32%.

With ratings still solid, the renewal negotiations zeroed in on the show’s economics. At this point in the run of a series, a network is responsible for the full production cost. With a well-known cast and extensive location shoots in New York, White Collar is an expensive show. What’s more, it is not owned by USA. USA parent NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment has made owning content a priority with the appointments of Jeff Wachtel and Dawn Olmstead to spearhead in-house production efforts. The network has a lot of projects in the pipeline and has been going through a portfolio changeover, replacing its older shows with new ones. From a business perspective, continuing White Collar at the current price tag might not have made a lot of sense for USA. But from a legacy standpoint, the show — which boasts one of the network’s most recognizable stars in Bomer and is one of is USA’s best critically received series — deserved a proper conclusion. (FtvS also had been willing to shoulder the cost of a final season and was open to a lower license fee.)

Barely contained lust, jealousy, and anger all bubble to the surface, becoming just as dangerous as the asteroid that’s heading right for them.
