Will be glad when Normal Heart comes into play. Tired of seeing Matt as costar to inferior actors.

    2. lprada says:

actually lok i’m glad that matt isn’t the center of this movie, for channing is ok this type of movie, but this isn’t the kind of movies where the people begun to take you seriously as actor, so for that i’m glad that matt isn’t even in the trailer xDDD hopefully The Normal Heart is a serious movie and the character of Matt seems to be a gift that will let him show everything he has as an actor!

    3. Skiwitch says:

Agree 100% with both of you! I’ll go see MM because it looks like fun and such a long time until WC returns. I understand that the guy who played his part in TNH on Broadway won a Tony award for it. Matt’s got his work cut out for him.

    4. murry says:

this movie really hot, cat’n wait!

    5. Sab says:

What lok said. It’s just too irritating.

    6. Matt Fan says:

No doubt Matt will be stellar in Normal Heart with the depth of his talent Betting it will be a nomination vehicle for him.

Magic Mike isn’t out yet, so It’s premature to form any opinions about it. I’m not making any assumptions about the movie based on this one trailer.

The story line of Magic Mike has always been clear. It’s about a young male stripper (Alex Pettyfer) who is taken under the wing of a more experienced colleague (Channing Tatum). Matt has always known this. It’s not as if he had any misconceptions about his role. Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer were always the principals and Matt’s role was always a supporting one. I don’t doubt that the relationship between Tatum’s character and the sister to Pettyfer’s character will be part of the movie, but it remains to be seen just how big it is.

There are several possible explanations for the trailer. Here’s an obvious one. Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey are the big names in Magic Mike. Tatum is the lead and the titular Magic Mike. It’s natural he would figure prominently in the trailer. His last two movies have done well at the box office, so he’s likely seen as the big draw. You may not agree, but you’re not looking at the box office data and you’re not the ones calling the shots at Warner. One of those movies was The Vow, a love story.

Warner may have decided marketing the movie as a romantic comedy was the best way to fill seats opening weekend. Don’t forget that Magic Mike opens against the G.I. Joe sequel (another Channing Tatum move). This positioning looks very much like a move to go after women. They’ve probably concluded that Magic Mike will be a tough sell for most (straight) men. Channing Tatum has said as much.

If Magic Mike opened to the same numbers as The Vow, Warner would be very pleased.

I’m not saying that this is what’s happened, but it’s a perfectly plausible and reasonable explanation. Over the years I’ve seen many a marketing campaign that did not accurately represent a movie. That could be the case here with this Magic Mike trailer. It may or may not be a marketing mistake. A lot of the buzz has built over the movie because we want to see a bunch of gorgeous men taking it off. People wanted to know whether or not there would be full frontal. To be fair to the Warner’s marketing team, I’ve seen movies get great internet buzz and then die at the box office. We’ll have to wait and see.

As to the lack of stripping in the trailer, keep in mind also that Warner probably wants to run the trailer in as many places possible. It sounds like the movie will be rated R, but that doesn’t mean they want the trailer to be rated R. If Warner releases a second trailer, it may lean more towards R and contain more scenes of the guys strutting their stuff and doing other wildly inappropriate things.

I’m waiting until the movie actually comes out before I make any judgments about it, the story line, the quality of the movie, how good a job Soderbergh has done, Matt’s role, and the quality of Matt’s performance. Based on Soderbergh’s track record and what he’s said himself about the movie, my own suspicion is that Magic Mike will be pretty entertaining. And who knows? Maybe some women go to see Channing Tatum and end up discovering Matt.

As to The Normal Heart, I’m not making any assumptions about that either. It’s an award winning play, but there are challenges to adapting a play for the big screen. I’ve seen plays that I loved, fail to make the transition successfully. Lots of projects look good on paper, but are duds upon arrival. Names like Julia Robert, Alec Baldwin, and Mark Ruffalo aren’t guarantees of either quality or box office. It also remains to be seen whether Ryan Murphy has the right touch for this kind of material. Lots of things can happen.

Like Magic Mike, I’ll wait until The Normal Heart is actually out before forming any opinions about it.

I return you to your hand wringing.

    8. Matt Fan says:

Matt’s been very smart in the last year with regard to roles. Small but great roll in In-Time showed he was made for the big screen. Glee guest shot was genius in expanding his fan base, showing everyong his singing and comedy chops, two more things he is great at. Magic Mike is another good play to keep himself from being pigeon holed as a con man type and face it, he is no doubt the best actor in that film so he should shine. Just read a Jon Hamm interview on how he feels he is pigeon holed. Normal Heart is great dramatic step. He is on a great course set by one of the best in the business.

      @Matt Fan

No need to get defensive. I didn’t say Matt wasn’t making good decisions as far as his movie roles, merely responding to some of the consternation over the recent Magic Mike trailer.

“He is on a great course set by one of the best in the business.”

I know he’s represented by CAA but not the names of Matt’s agent or manager specifically. Can you tell us their names?

Just realized my aunt was still logged into my iMac and I had posted that previous message from her account. Logged back in as myself. Re-posting message to avoid confusion.

I think MM has the potential to turn out as a really fun movie. I’m looking forward to the Normal Heart too, but I don’t think a role is of higher value just because it’s a “serious” one. It always depends on how the movie is done, so I think TNH can as much turn out as good or bad as MM can. Well, hoping both will be great of course!
