in an interview ryan murphy has said that matt will have to lose 25 pounds for his role in “the normal heart”…25 !

    2. Sab says:

LOL @ Matt doing the Twist. Adorable.

    3. Sab says:

@fan62 – I read that. I really hope he puts some weight ON first before he has to lose it. As things stand, he doesn’t have 25 lbs to lose.

    4. fan62 says:

@ Sab…I hope he won’t look like michael fassbender in “hunger”…he will have to regain those 25 pounds quickly for white collar, however.

    5. Matt Fan says:

The Normal Heart will be the next big turning point for him just like WC was.

    6. Melissa says:

@Sab: “I really hope he puts some weight ON first before he has to lose it. As things stand, he doesn’t have 25 lbs to lose.”

      That doesn’t track.

Matt’s character in The Normal Heart has AIDS. The initial shooting covers the early parts before his character contracts the disease and is still healthy. Then they’ll shut down and resume shooting when he has lost the weight to look the part of a man dying of AIDS. If he puts on more weight now he’ll have just that much more weight to lose later.

    7. Sab says:

@ Melissa. What I mean is: if he puts some weight on before they start filming (not now, he’s still playing Neal) – and I’m not talking a huge amount, say 10 lbs – then he’ll be a bit heavier when they film the first part of the movie when the character is healthy, then he’ll still only need to lose about 25 lbs to show a drastic weight loss for the second half of filming – and thus the necessary change for dramatic effect – but he won’t have to drop to a level that could affect his health.

Not looking to get into a back and forth with anyone on this. This is just how I personally think it should be handled.

    8. Mary says:

It may be tricky photography but in the last Twilight movie they had Kristen Stewart looking skeletal and it was scary until I found out that it was photography trickery. Too bad they can’t do that with Matt so he doesn’t get into a scary zone. But then I doubt he’d put himself into a bad position & will probably have a doctor to help so he stays healthy.
Much as I look forward to Magic Mike, The Normal Heart is the one I really want to see.

    9. Melissa says:

The Normal Heart is set in the 80s, a time when AIDS was devastating an entire generation of young gay men. I can’t speak for Ryan Murphy but I assume that he wants to reflect as accurately as he can what was happening at that time and the impact of that terrible disease. When Matt is losing weight for the part it’s so that he more closely resembles an AIDS patient, not so that he looks like a former body builder or athlete who slimmed down from his peak competitive days.

And given that he’s in the middle of shooting White Collar right now, how would you suggest he put on more weight in the midst of long work days? Eat a lot more calories so he can put on more fat? Ugh. Talk about unhealthy.

But let’s say for the sake of argument that Matt somehow finds time to work all those hours in a gym to build even more muscle bulk before filming The Normal Heart. His character Felix Turner is a fashion writer for the New York Times, not a body builder or a Chippendales dancer. A guy that buff with pumped up pectorals, biceps, and deltoids would be completely out of character.

And don’t forget we don’t even know what Matt’s starting weight is. He all ready put on a lot of muscle for Magic Mike. Rather than freaking out over a number, I’d be more concerned about how he plans to slim down for the role. If he does it carefully with the right program designed by a certified physical trainer (e.g. a lot of cardio and low intensity weight training) and by working with a qualified nutritionist to ensure he’s getting all the nutrients he needs while reducing calories, he can do it without negatively affecting his health in the short and long term.

    10. lprada says:

I agreed with Melissa, and for those with worries just checkout the number of times that Christian Bale gain and lose weight for roles.

    11. R says:

      Agree with Melissa too.

Jeez, how insulting would that be to AIDS patients if he still looked hot when he is supposed to be dying! Larry Kramer-the person who wrote this AND lived through this-would have a fit!

    12. anita says:

I don’t think he should bulk up in order to lose weight for the role. I lived in San Francisco in the 80’s and saw firsthand what happened to AIDS patients. Lots of beautiful, fit men dramatically lost weight, turning into shadows of their former selves. In order to realistically show this, Matt’s going to have to drop some weight. Hopefully, it won’t be the full 25 pounds, as they can do tricks with makeup, etc.

Personally, having lived through this time, I don’t know if I can watch this movie. I lost too many friends to this disease and it’s just too hard to go back there.

That said, it’s going to be a good reminder of history, and the fact that HIV/AIDS is still out there, and we all need to be careful.
